(an update as of Dec.12th, below)

Haven’t heard much from ol’ Cherty, lately – he is most likely still trying to convince himself that there really were no bodies floating in New Orleans during Katrina, that this was all made up by hysterical journalists, and there was no video evidence to support it.
Or not.
Maybe he has been staying at home with his family, quietly enjoying his sparkling clean house, a sparkling clean house that has been being cleaned by illegal immigrants.
Gasp, no, you say.
Sigh, yes. Our Head of Homeland Security has illegal immigrants working in his house.
Every few weeks, according to the Washington Post, the Secret Service screened the identification of employees from a Maryland cleaning company before they entered the house, and have been doing this for the last four years, where the employees sailed through the checks, only now it turns out that some were illegal.
Naturally, all of the blame is falling onto the head of the company owner, a Mr. James D. Reid, who is receiving such a heavy fine – $22, 880.00 – that he will most likely go out of business.
I have just a couple of questions. Wouldn’t you think that the Secret Service, especially the ones dealing with the man in charge of Homeland Security, would be in possession of far superior equipment and resources to detect an illegal immigrant than the business owner would? And if you were Michael Chertoff, wouldn’t you take a personal interest in the people entering your home, and just for shits and grins, double check the Secret Service’s work?
Naaaah – Let’s blame the company, and to cover our embarrassment, fire the business owner and sock him with an enormous fine.
As per the last eight years, we have another prominent member of this Rebublican Administration, looking out for the small business owner.
I would expect nothing less from Michael “Chert-y” Chertoff.

“We’re going to continue to enforce the law. It’s going to be tough, we don’t really have the ability to enforce the law with respect to illegal work in this country in a way that’s truly effective.” Michael Chertoff
Um, yeah, obviously you do not have the ability to enforce the law concerning illegal work in this country. This has now become quite evident.
Gosh, this guy makes me feel safe insofar as “Homeland Security” – don’t you feel well protected?
“Chert, Chert, Chert-y. goodbye….
Chert, Chert, Chert-y, don’t cry…”
UPDATE – Today I received an e-mail from the DHS, from Michael Chertoffs Assistant Press Secretary, Caroline Dierker. See Below.

It is hard to read, so I posted it and our ensuing conversation into the ‘comments’ section of this post.
I must make an admission here – I am torn. This contact from DHS is so ripe for satire, that my eyeballs are about to pop out, yet I found Ms. Dierker to be very professional, polite, obviously loyal to her boss, and swiftly handles any negative press, in any form, written about him.
Ms. Dierker is going to be out of a job soon, and she seems to be a conscientious, hardworking employee, so I am having a bit of an internal struggle with my desire to make a joke at her expense.
The obvious joke is, of course, doesn’t the office of Homeland Security have more pressing issues on it’s plate than contacting a lowly blogger such as myself? There are many more hard hitting political bloggers out there than I, yet I receive an e-mail from the assistant press secretary. I hate to admit it, but my ego is somewhat inflated, so ultimately, I think the joke is on me.
To Ms. Dierker:
I hope that once the new administration is in, you find a good job that you are happy with, as I stated above, you seem to be an exemplary employee.
In the meantime, since I posted your request in the comments section, will you make sure that I do not get thrown over the fence in the middle of the night?
Thank you,

Dear Kelly:
The Department of Homeland Security saw that you were writing about today’s Washington Post story about Secretary Chertoff’s employment of a cleaning service that hired illegal immigrants. The DHS Press Office would appreciate it if you would consider linking in your story to the response of DHS spokesman Russ Knocke:
“Every contractor in the United States has the responsibility of ensuring their workers are legal. As customers, the Chertoffs obtained assurances from Mr. Reid that any personnel he dispatched to their home were authorized to work in the United States.
As soon as the Chertoffs learned that Mr. Reid deceived them by employing some unauthorized workers, they fired him. Further, Secretary Chertoff recused himself from any involvement in immigration enforcement actions that could follow.
The United States Secret Service maintains a round the clock security presence at the residences of protectees, and screens individuals who enter a residence or have business to conduct on the property.
This matter illustrates the need for comprehensive immigration reform, and the importance of effective tools for companies to determine the lawful status of their workforce.
More 91,000 employers have enrolled in E-verify, and there were more than 6.6 million workers checked last year. E-verify is free, fast and available online for employers. It is unfortunate that Mr. Reid did not acknowledge his own personal responsibility and check the eligibility of his work force.”

Subject: Re: DHS Response to the Washington Post Story on Secretary Michael Chertoff
Dear Caroline,
I have looked all over the DHS web site for a press release, and have found nothing. I looked up Russ Knocke, and there was no press release. He is quoted in a number of the articles, but this press release was not found. I can print this e-mail as a comment, if you would like, or you can send me a direct link, and I will add it to the original post, where I have the Washington Post link. Does that work for you?
As you can tell, I am not, nor ever have been a fan of Michael Chertoff’s, and I still have a personal opinion on the issue, but in the interests of fairness, I am more than happy to put up anything from your office that you would like posted.
Best,
Kelly Mahan Jaramillo
Kelly,
Thanks for your response. We didn’t issue a formal release with Russ Knocke’s statement, so there is no formal product on our Web site. But we’d greatly appreciate it if you’d enter it as a comment. Thank you!
Best,
Caroline Dierker
Wow…our security tax dollars at work and Mr. Chertoff covering his posterior.
I wish I could afford an assistant in my business who spends their time reading blogs that mention my business, though I seriously doubt if there are any, other than those touting my exemplary work.
I’m sure he will have a nice cushy job working for a private “security” firm after leaving office.
LOLOL – Hey Rick – I tout your exemplary work whenever I get a chance, and I do it for love, not money, you know that!
And of course Michael Chertoff will have a cushy job when this is all over – after all “Chertoff” in Russian means “the devil”, “son of the devil” and assorted other “devil” associations.
I just hope ol’ Cherty brings his loyal employees ( like the ones who have to sit around and write letters to goof-ball bloggers like myself) along to his next gig.
The question be: Is the Devil loyal?
Dear Caroline,
You will find in the next post that I strongly disagree with the rebuttal that your Boss’s office has put out.
And on top of it, Michael Chertoff has recused himself from any involvement in immigration actions that could follow.
He doesn’t even have the guts to take his share of the responsibility on who is in his own house – he would rather sink a small business owner.
Shameful.
You really deserve to work for someone with more integrity that Michael Chertoff.
