Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was never even on my radar until I went there for a conference and was wowed before I even stepped out of the cab. No other American city bursts into view with such an entrance as Steel City.

Coming from the airport we emerged from the gloom of Fort Pitt Tunnel onto a bridge and a stunning view of the downtown towers glittering in the sun. Down below were Pittsburgh’s three rivers the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio which meet at the Golden Triangle where Point State Park’s Fountain shoots water 200 feet in the air. Riverfront parks weave through out.

The Washington Post 2012 Out-In list featured Pittsburgh as in and Portland out. Pittsburgh was praised for its nice scenery, downtown and people – hip without trying to be. National Geographic Traveler named the city one of the world’s 20 must-see destinations in 2011.

The turnaround for Pittsburgh…
